Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
40+ years
What is your primary product or service?
Commercial Advertising Photography. On-Location Product, Architectural, Industrial, Events, and Executive Portraits Photographer.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My cousin, who is several years older than me, would come home on leave from the Service and show the images he took while being a Navy Chaplin.
Our family would go to his parents house on Saturday night and watch a slide show of all the wonderful pictures he had taken since his last leave.
He wasn't a professional photographer, but the idea of getting good at taking photographs got me really excited. As a 12 year old, I would try to project images on a white sheet without a slide projector using a desk lamp and several magnifying glasses..
My older sister went on a school trip to Chicago and brought back a miniature camera for me. I was hooked.
Later, after getting out of service, I got a job at a studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From there, I went to studios owned by MGM and became a studio manager in Chicago. Later I got a job at the University of Illinois in Chicago as a photographer and instructor. After a couple years, they asked me to teach photography glasses to full time students.
In the meantime, I started my own studio in the Chicago Area and later quit teaching because I was on call as a photographer for General Motors through a Design studio and traveled in and out of the country photographing for the top 500 Corporations in the world.
I always loved horses so my wife and I found land in Missouri and moved to the Kansas City Area. We love it here.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
